Enlightenment is freeing Mabon

Freeing Mabon

This is the story of Mabon, whom the season of Mabon beginning at the Autumnal Equinox and ending at Halloween is based on.  We integrate the story with an activity of freeing ourselves from the stories we weave using yarn and in making a Mabon piñata full of treasures.

The Story of Mabon, Son of Madron

The complete version I love and use is reimagined and retold by Starhawk in the book Circle Round, Raising Children in the Goddess Traditions. Here is a summary from the Circle of the Sacred Muse:

The birth of Mabon ap Modron (Great Son of the Great Mother) is celebrated at the Equinox. He is born from his mother Modron (Great Mother), who is seen as the Guardian of the Otherworld, the Earth and the Protector. Mabon was stolen from his mother, Modron, when he was three nights old. In different versions of the story he was three years old. In one version of the myth the Eagle, the Owl, the Blackbird, the Stag and the Salmon rescued him, while in another King Arthur was the one who saved him. During his captivity, Mabon dwelled in a magical Otherworld -Madron’s Womb. Madron’s womb was a place of challenge and nurturing, and while there Mabon grew in strength and wisdom before being reborn as the Son of Light, his mother’s Champion.

For me the story of Mabon signifies the quest that we all must make to free ourselves, our child selves, and unite with the One.

Weaving our personal stories

There is only One.  That One is also being us.  But we forget who we truly are and become entrapped and entangled in life's illusion.  To illustrate the complicated stories we weave through our lives, each of the children holds a skein of yarn. Take the end and tie their skeins together in the center.  Put on some music and dance around one another, much like in the maypole dance but without any organization.  Very soon there is a huge knot and all are tied up in the process.  Some are no longer able to walk or dance and sit on the ground becoming more and more entangled. When they cannot move, ask them to find a way to free themselves.  Some may simple step out of the tangle and others may be helped out.

The lesson is that we can likewise free ourselves from our entangled lives by stepping out of lives and the emotional struggles (by witnessing) or by asking for help (from our higher Self).

Freeing Mabon

This is a great Mabon and Halloween craft from DIYCandy.  The mummies may represent Mabon and inside the toilet paper roll piñata place jewels and sweets (to represent our true nature).
